Fine lines and wrinkles

Understand normal skin ageing, environmental contributors and the limits of appearance-focused care.

What “Fine lines and wrinkles” can mean

Lines and wrinkles are normal features of ageing skin. Fine surface lines, expression lines and deeper folds arise from different combinations of movement, skin structure, volume and support.

Ageing does not require treatment. If someone chooses to explore cosmetic care, the discussion should be about the specific feature, not promises to reverse ageing.

Why it may occur

  • Time-related changes in collagen, elastin, hydration and cell turnover.
  • Repeated facial movement and inherited facial structure.
  • Cumulative UV exposure and smoking.
  • Changes in facial fat, bone support and skin elasticity.

When assessment matters

A consultation should review the actual concern, skin health, medicines, prior procedures and expectations.

A new lesion, sore or changing patch is not simply a wrinkle and should be medically assessed.

Broad care pathways

The right starting point depends on the cause, your health and what matters to you. These categories are for discussion, not a recommendation.

Skin health

Sun protection, gentle cleansing, moisturising and avoiding smoking support skin health. They do not stop normal ageing.

Surface-focused care

Topical care, peels or resurfacing may be discussed for selected fine textural changes, with irritation, downtime and pigment risk considered.

Structure or movement

Other medical or procedural categories may be discussed by appropriately qualified practitioners. They have different targets, durations and risks and require individual assessment.

Set realistic expectations

  • Natural movement, texture and asymmetry remain after treatment.
  • Results vary and may be temporary; maintenance, downtime and complications should be discussed before consent.

Questions worth asking at a consultation

  • Is the concern mainly surface texture, movement or structural support?
  • What happens if I choose no treatment?
  • What result is realistic without removing natural expression?

Analytics and hosting information

Help us understand what people research and whether the directory works. If you allow anonymous product analytics, Aesthetics Australia records general actions and selected broad search categories, including state, concern, treatment and device. We do not record your words, suburb, postcode, clinic choices or a personal identifier. You can change this choice at any time.

Our additional first-party product events are off unless you choose to allow them. They do not use an analytics identifier or record clinic names, search words, suburb or postcode. A selected state, concern, treatment or device may be counted separately and is shown in clinic reporting only when at least 20 selections occur in a month.
