Focused-ultrasound devices

Aesthetic focused-ultrasound systems concentrate acoustic energy at selected depths below the skin. They are different from diagnostic ultrasound, although one platform may use imaging to visualise tissue before energy delivery.

How it works

Focused acoustic waves converge at planned points, producing small zones of thermal effect below the surface. Cartridge depth, line placement, energy and anatomy affect treatment delivery.

  • Focused ultrasound does not reproduce a surgical lift.
  • HIFU body contouring and microfocused ultrasound for skin laxity are not identical procedures.
  • Results and recovery vary, and anatomy matters.

Risks and cautions

  • Pain, swelling, bruising, altered sensation and temporary weakness have been reported.
  • Incorrect depth or placement can affect nerves or other structures.
  • A detailed history and anatomical assessment are important.
