Cryolipolysis (controlled cooling)

A clinic-based cooling platform with shaped applicators placed over selected body areas.

What distinguishes it

It belongs to the cryolipolysis family; compare applicator fit, treatment plan and device-specific risks rather than assuming all ‘fat freezing’ systems are equivalent.

How this technology works

Cooling devices aim to expose selected fatty tissue to controlled cold. Heat-based systems may use radiofrequency, laser, microwave or ultrasound energy. Electromagnetic systems induce repeated muscle contractions. These mechanisms are not interchangeable and do not address the same thing.

Risks, limits and uncertainty

  • Pain, tenderness, bruising, swelling, altered sensation or temporary skin changes may occur.
  • Heat-based systems can cause burns; cooling has device-specific complications; electromagnetic treatment has contraindications that must be screened.
  • Ask about uncommon but important risks for the exact device and treatment area.
  • These devices are not substitutes for weight-management care and should not be presented as treating obesity.
  • A change in measurement, muscle activity, skin appearance and body weight are different outcomes.
  • Results vary and a course of treatment or maintenance may be proposed.

Questions to take to a consultation

  • What exact device and handpiece will be used, and what is it intended to do?
  • Who will perform the treatment, and what training and experience do they have with this device?
  • What results are realistic for me, how many sessions may be discussed, and when would change be assessed?
  • What are the important risks, alternatives, costs and aftercare requirements?
