Body contouring and muscle-stimulation devices

This is a mixed group of devices used on the body. They may cool or heat tissue, deliver focused energy, or stimulate muscle contractions. A brand name does not tell you which mechanism is being used, so start by identifying the technology and its intended purpose.

How it works

Cooling devices aim to expose selected fatty tissue to controlled cold. Heat-based systems may use radiofrequency, laser, microwave or ultrasound energy. Electromagnetic systems induce repeated muscle contractions. These mechanisms are not interchangeable and do not address the same thing.

Potential benefits discussed

  • A non-surgical approach may be discussed for a localised body concern.
  • Some systems are designed around muscle stimulation rather than fat or skin.
  • Treatment is usually delivered in a clinic without a surgical incision, although recovery and discomfort vary by device.
